Circulation Policy

Purpose: To establish the guidelines for borrowing materials from the Calhoun County Library

Policy: Library patrons living or owning property within Calhoun County may borrow items without paying any fee if the items are returned in a timely manner. A Calhoun County resident patron’s first library card is free. The cost for a replacement card for county residents is $1.00. Library cards will expire 3 years from the date of registration for residents of Calhoun County.

Residents of surrounding counties may borrow items from the Calhoun County Library for a nonresident fee of $1.00. Nonresident library cards will expire after 1 year.

The number of materials that any one person may borrow from Calhoun County Library is limited to 20 items at one time (excluding DVDs, which are limited to 3 at one time).

Identification information required of library patrons and parents or guardians of minor patrons at the time of registration includes: identification in the form of a driver’s license, state identification, military identification number, or student identification number. Proof of mailing address may be requested at the discretion of the Director. Registration for a library card does not require the ability to write one’s name.

No new card will be issued to a minor under age 16 without the signature of a parent or guardian on the registration card, signifying that the parent or guardian accepts responsibility for the physical condition of materials checked out by the child as well as for ensuring that all materials are returned to the library. Renewal or replacement cards will not be issued to minors without the approval of a parent or guardian.

The loan period for books and other print items is 14 days. The renewal period is also 14 days, and items may be renewed 2 times provided no other patrons have placed a “hold” on the item. The loan period for DVDs is 5 days. DVDs cannot be renewed.

No overdue fees are charged; however, after an item has been overdue for 14 days patrons will be telephoned as a reminder to return items. All items 180 days or more overdue will convert to a lost status and a lost fee will be charged. The fee for lost items is equal to the replacement cost of the unreturned item. A brand new, identical copy of the lost item may be provided by the patron in lieu of the lost fee.

Library patrons may place a “hold” on any circulating item. There is no limit to the number of holds a customer may place at one time. Holds not retrieved within 3 business days of the patron having been notified will be returned to the shelves for use by other patrons.
